KOBK Nominated For 4 Glyph Comic Awards

Just found out that KOBK was nominated for 4 Glyph Comics Awards(Best Story, Best Writer, Best Male Character & Best Female Character)! It’s an honor for Sean and I and we’d like to thank the judges for the nominations. And, of course, thanks to everyone whose supported and spread the word about our book!  

KOBK is a graphic novel, narrated by DASHAWN, a young man who balances his luxurious lifestyle with his friends, relationships and family. The story follows him as he gives life lessons to his nephew, while hanging with his crew and making time for the women in his life. The themes of what’s ethical in business and relationships, what defines luxury, romance, community and self preservation in New York City are all prevalent as the story is told. Written by C.J. Johnson and illustrated by Sean Mack.

The 2013 Glyph Comics Awards ceremony will be held at the 12th Annual East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBACC) on Friday, May 17, 2013 at The African American Museum located at 701 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. It’s an annual celebration of Black comic creators and comics highlighted by Black characters, essentially the spirit of what BFMC is all about.

I just read KOBK, and if you haven’t heard about it, you should definitely check it out. I’m a big fan of the whole urban-educated-successful-blackness thing, but it is pretty lacking from a feminist standpoint; there are a few really cool, strong female characters, but it barely comes close to passing the Bechdel test and keeps maleness at the forefront. There’s also no representation of queerness, but whatever.

I really enjoyed this. Writing was intelligent, the artistry was really cool and clever, and it was made by C.J. Johnson and Sean Mack, two talented people of color. It’s totally worth the $4 and you should totally support them!

And recently, I’ve had the privilege to consider him a colleague and friend. But I must admit I was worried when he gave me a brief overview of KOBK. I must also admit I didn’t hear much after he told me the title was KOBK, so I was apprehensive when I opened the newly downloaded file. What kind of title was that for graphic novel? A fitting one. Narrated by Dashawn, a young man who balances his luxurious lifestyle with his friends, relationships and family. The story follows him as he gives life lessons to his nephew, while hanging with his crew and making time for the women in his life. C.J. explores what is ethical in business and relationships, what defines luxury, romance, community and self preservation in New York City. And illustrator Sean Mack brings it all to life, with honest and realistic depictions of the themes, emotions and… oh yeah… sex.
